Learn how to safely package medications at home using a unit dose cold seal kit. Step-by-step instructions for creating blister packs, plus common mistakes to avoid.

Quick answer

Use a unit dose cold seal kit to create custom blister packs at home by pressing medication between a preformed plastic blister and a foil backing — no heat or machines needed.

Why choose cold seal over heat seal

Cold seal kits use pressure-activated adhesive, so you don't need a heat sealer or any electricity. This makes them ideal for home use, travel, or situations where you want to package meds quickly without extra equipment. The trade-off is that the seal is not as tamper-evident as a heat-sealed pack, so they are best for short-term organization rather than long-term storage.

How to use a unit dose cold seal kit

  1. Prepare your work area and supplies: Lay out the cold seal kit, your medications, and the blister cards. Wash your hands and make sure the surface is clean and dry. Open the kit and separate the blister sheets from the foil backing cards. Do not touch the adhesive side of the foil — oils from your fingers can weaken the seal.
  2. Place medication into the blister cavities: Press one pill or dose into each clear blister cavity on the plastic sheet. Make sure each dose sits flat and does not stick out above the rim. For tablets or capsules, use tweezers if needed to avoid direct contact. Overfilling a cavity can prevent the foil from sealing properly. If the dose is too large, use a different blister size.
  3. Align and press the foil backing: Peel the protective liner off the foil backing card (if present) and place it adhesive-side down over the filled blister sheet. Line up the edges carefully. Press firmly across the entire surface with your hands or a roller, starting from the center and moving outward. Apply even pressure — pressing only the edges can leave air pockets that weaken the seal.
  4. Check each seal and label the card: Run your finger over each blister to confirm the foil is fully adhered with no wrinkles or gaps. Write the medication name, dose, and date on the card using a permanent marker. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. If a blister does not seal, remove the dose and try again with a fresh blister cavity — do not reuse the same foil.
